Crime report from neighbor

Hi Everyone,

Today (Friday, May 27) at 10:45am Joe saw a squad car at the intersection of 18th Ct and 9th Ave detaining a white teenage boy on a bike. At that time another police car raced down to 20th near 4th Ave. Joe drove down to see what was going on at 20th St and 4th Ave. The police had stopped a small, light brown/gold car with a young black couple.

When Joe circled back around to 9th Ave he saw the teenager in the back of the squad car, bike in the trunk. When he went back to 20th St there were 3 marked police cars and one unmarked. The male was in the back of one police car while the woman was being cuffed. A little later their car which had been vigorously searched was being loaded on a truck and driven away.

Two separate incidents going on at the same time? Looks like the police are starting to get a handle on things.

Action Committee

On May 17th, several members of the neighborhood met with Captain London of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department to discuss what positive steps could be taken to address the rash of residential break-ins in Croissant Park. I'm giving everyone who DIDN'T show up the benefit of the doubt- yes the notice went out last minute - and yes- it did say it was a"crime watch" meeting so perhaps I wouldn't have attended either had I not been one of the organizers. Having said that however, it was little disappointing that so few of our neighbors turned out to see what they could do to make a difference.

No, we are not proposing a crime watch thing where everyone has matching vests and marches up and down the neighborhood streets on the look out for crime - the nearest I would get to something like that is to sit on my front porch with an adult beverage in hand and watch others and perhaps make unkind comments as to how neon yellow or orange doesn't do anything for most people. Rather, what Captain London was proposing we do, and what we have started to do, is more of an "awareness" group- we are already doing a lot that he said would be helpful - communicating on the blog, through e-mail blasts and the like. We need some fresh ideas though - and for people other than board memebers to get involved.

The good news is that they seem to have caught a few of the miscreants as the incidents have definitely dropped of- but we do want to keep the issue on the front burner.

We will be having our second meeting of the Action Committee Tuesday June 14th at 6:30 at the community center. We hope more of you will get involved- and be able to attend. It does not make sense that only people from 16th street north to Davie and west of 4th Ave. attended - this is a community wide problem and we would like the entire neighborhood represented.

We will also be having a crime update presentation at our last general meeting before the summer - June 28th at 7 PM - I hope to see a lot of you there.

Brownie's ....... Tap 42

Everyone is curious about "The New Brownie's," which is still months from opening at 1411 South Andrews. So I had a chat with Lizette Cruz, the new bar manager, about what's planned for the location. Below is a rundown of what she told me, and some photos. Cal PS: I don't get paid for this — not even a free wedge fry! Please pass it on to your lists, though! NAME: "Tap 42" because — you guessed it — they will have 42 beers on tap. The beers will include many unusual "craft beers." Plus there will be 100 types of beer available in bottles. OWNERS: Brothers Blaise and Shawn McMackin CUISINE: "Jacked-up bar food," which is to say freshly-made, never-frozen burgers with never-frozen, made-on-site, hand-cut wedge fries. Biiig servings of them, too! Eight types of burgers. Tacos. Salads. Ahi tuna. Appetizers, including the popular wings (with some unusual, made-on-site sauces), jalapeno poppers, and appetizer platters, which will change frequently. Plus much more!! Breads will come from a local baker, not a factory. Other than the breads, pretty much everything will be made in-house and made fresh daily. (The menu is not yet available.) HOURS: 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. OPENING: Late summer. Maybe August. LIQUOR: In addition to the beers, they will have a full bar. ENTERTAINMENT: Jazz, reggae and lighter music will be among the offerings at night. There will be NO outdoor music! On the weekends there will be live music in the afternoons, too. They have purchased the NFL's TV package so sports fans will be able to do their thing. CHILDREN: No kids menu. Not really a place for kids. DECOR: Dressed-up "warehouse modern." Galvanized steel, reclaimed wood, cement, rebar. A "modern, very clean" look. For an online logo design contest they called it "a cool, edgy, industrial-type space." Their color preferences were listed as "black, copper, gray, galvanized steel." Doesn't sound very tropical to me! I guess we'll have to see it! No renderings are available. They are doing the interior themselves, so this won't be one of those corporate rubber stamp places. There will be an outdoor patio. PHILOSOPHY: They would rather keep the prices down so you can come by often, than jack up the prices so you only come by once in a Blue Moon. The most expensive burger — freshly-made with those fresh, made-on-site fries (a lot of them!) — will be about $10. CLIENTELE: A place where business people will feel comfortable bringing their clients for lunch or stopping by for Happy Hour, and couples will feel comfortable stopping by for dinner, or visiting for some late-night food and music. TO STAY IN TOUCH: Go to http://www.facebook.com/tap42bar and hit "Like" to get on their list.

Crime alert - mailboxes

""Asking all neighbors to keep an eye out for each others mail. I found out over the last few days I have been a victim of identity theft. They think it was through mail, all I know is I had to cancel 6 credit cards and 2 bank accounts as of this evening. I still dont know how bad it is. I hate to say my neighbors bank account was drained 2 days ago. Maybe a coincidence, but please keep an eye out and if you get your neighbors mail, let your mail carrier know so they can be more aware. Thanks for being an alert neighbor : )""

George Wilson has passed

George A. Wilson, born July 3, 1921, a Fort Lauderdale resident for 55 years, passed away on Friday, May 6th.

George was born in Rahway, New Jersey and was a World War II Air Force Pilot Veteran. He worked for the Sun-Sentinel Newspaper for over 26 years in the Advertising Department.

In George's early years he was an excellent Tennis player, who had the joy of winning the New Jersey State Men's Individual Tennis Championship at the young age of 18. Having also proven his skills as an outstanding Basketball player, he was offered a Basketball Scholarship to Seton Hall University; however he chose instead to join the Air Force as a Pilot during World War II. In the early 1950's he moved to Fort Lauderdale and took up the game of golf. As a self-taught player, he became so good that he enjoyed a 2 handicap and won the Fort Lauderdale City Golf Championship. In that same year he also won the Fort Lauderdale City Tennis Championship.

While working at the Sun-Sentinel Newspaper, he helped launch the creation of the Broward County Junior Golf Association, which to this day has given the opportunity to many junior players to compete in a game that was so dear to George. He was also a coach for his son, Jeff's, Little League Baseball team at the former Little Yankee Stadium, now known as Floyd Hall Stadium and for many years George enjoyed his volunteer work at the stadium. He also enjoyed Snook fishing, his favorite fish, in the waterways of Fort Lauderdale.

George is survived by his son, Jeff, his devoted companion and former wife, Rose, his daughter-in-law Lourdes and two daughters, Donna and Jamie.

A simple celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Fort Lauderdale, 111 SW 11th Street, on Sunday, May 29th at 2:00pm.

The family requests that memorial donations, in his honor, be earmarked for the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society.

Smart Watts FREE Workshop

Minutes of the April Neighborhood Meeting

Meeting of the Croissant Park Civic Association
April 26, 2011 - 7:00 pm in the Community Center

Present: Steve Cook, Patricia Rathburn, Virginia Russell, Rhonda Kramer
Absent: John McNamara

Steve led the pledge of allegiance and introduced Captain Victor London of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Captain London reported a spike in crime for our neighborhood for April with 11 residential burglaries - one drug related; 8 vehicle burglaries and 2 business burglaries.

What our neighborhood needs more of: NOSEY NEIGHBORS who notice what vehicles belong to their neighbors, who lives there and abnormalities.

What the police are doing: more patrols, mounted police and undercover officers.

Many residents told their own stories of being victims. Captain London stressed writing down serial #'s of your property so they can be identified and returned if pawned. Pawn shops are supposed to log the item in and the police then crosscheck with the serial #'s they have.

There was one arrest of a drug dealer who has others do the robberies with personal knowledge of the victim. Another group has a history of burglaries. No clear patterns - but there may be another arrest soon from leads.

A resident who has been burglarized twice praised the P.D. and asked how we get more police presence. Captain London offered his time to set up a neighborhood watch with a neighborhood action committee. (let us know if you would like to participate)

Intel Lead Policing puts resources where needed. (that is where reporting incidents becomes very important.)

Question: Average amount of time to expect a response from P.D. when calling non-emergency?
Answer: Based on priority - 'High' priority would be someone in danger or burglary in progress (call 911). 'Low' priority is a burglary/suspicious activity that already happened (call 954.828.5700).
Question: Is the CPCA doing anything to get info out?
Answer: Blog, Facebook & Emails. We may not be getting Facebook posts out quickly enough. Residents are urged to post any and all incidents themselves. Those not on Facebook can report to the Association for posting on the Blog (which anyone with a computer can access).

AT&T marketers were reported all over the neighborhood and caused suspicion. It was reported that at least one was actually selling AT&T services. Neighbors were cautioned to check for I.D. and call to verify if you open the door to solicitors.

Steve Cook mentioned a Smart Watch Program that offers credits for 'green' appliances, etc. The program will be holding workshops - flyer in separate article.

Lynette Culp gave out information about the benefits of Yoga and invited neighbors to come to Secret Woods for her Yoga classes at 3:45 on Thursdays and 10 am on Saturdays. Secret Woods is at 2701 W. S.R. 84 - 954.524.6034 - lynetteculp@bellsouth.net

The 50/50 drawing was won by Michael Jaramillo, who donated his winnings back to the Association.

The meeting had over 50 neighbors in attendance and adjourned around 9:00.
