January 2019 CPCA Meeting

January 2019 CPCA Neighborhood Meeting, Pot Luck Supper/Food Drive

Happy 2019 Croissant Park,

Every January we like to celebrate the new year with a Pot Luck Supper for our Croissant Park neighbors.  All are invited to join in.  This year we had a food drive for the furloughed federal employees of the Coast Guard, TSA, etc.  It is our way to say thank you to those hard-working folks who are not getting a paycheck.

Our FLPD Neighborhood Crime team reported that since Thanksgiving 2018 we have had 1 home burglary, 1 robbery in which a victim had her purse and jewelry taken, 1 stolen vehicle.   All in all, that’s an outstanding crime report for our neighborhood.  Keep up the good work by locking cars, keeping valuables out of sight and properly securing our homes.

Our guest tonight was Vice-Mayor/Commissioner Ben Sorensen who spoke to us about the bond issues that will be coming up on our ballot March 12, 2019.

A bond is for a new, state-of-the-art police headquarters.  The current building was constructed over 60 years ago and it’s cheaper to build new than continually make expensive repairs.

A parks bond for more green space for Citywide parks, funds for a “tunnel top” park over the Federal Hwy tunnel, and improvements to Holiday Park and Lockhart Stadium, among other projects.

A Charter Proposal on the ballot will ask to extend Mayor and Commissioner terms to 4 years and move elections to November every 4 years to alleviate the extra expensive elections in March, which will save money and increases voter turnout.  For more info on the issues go to www.fortlauderdale.gov

Comm. Sorensen will look into the sober home issues in our neighborhood, as a neighbor reported that there are four sober homes in a row on 14th Court, which clearly violates the regulations.

Florida Housing Authority is looking for developers who might be interested in creating affordable housing on the empty lot at SW 17th St and the railroad tracks.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation wants to build 680 units, 263 square feet each on a sight on 3rd Avenue.
Comm. Ben Sorensen welcomes us to contact him at bsorensen@fortlauderdale.gov

The Holiday Lighting contest winner was Brett Walker.  His friends were there to accept the certificate $50 check.  congratulations Brett

Thanks to all who contributed to our food drive and our annual January Pot Luck Supper. Thanks also for the new and renewal membership signups.

Our 50/50 raffle winner generously gave her winnings back and the proceeds will go towards groceries for the food drive.
