#Croissant Park #Pet Photo Contest 2022

We haven't done this in a few years because we had Bark in the Park instead but Covid has put that event on temporary hold for now. It will reappear as soon as possible. It was a lot of fun to see everyone's photo entries a few years ago and we hope to get even more this year. Please use Nextdoor and search for #Croissant Park #Pet Photo Contest 2022 and use THAT POST ONLY to submit your entry. Rules:

1. You must be a member of the Croissant Park Civic Association in 2022 to submit a photo. Anyone can vote if you live in Croissant Park. 2. Any pet is eligible - does not have to be a dog or cat. You can submit more than one in separate replies. 3. If you would like to submit a photo but are not yet a member, you will need to join by retrieving the Membership Application in the 'Documents' section under the green 'Home' label located on the left of your screen if you are on Nextdoor and mail a check right away. You can also join via PayPal - just send $20 to MyCroissantPark@gmail.com. If you can't find the Membership Application, just mail a check to CPCA, P.O. Box 13117, Fort Lauderdale FL 33316. You can submit your photo online via Nextdoor now - but it will not be voted on unless you join either before, or at the February meeting (if we are able to have an in-person meeting as planned). 4. Voting will be entirely online since we aren't sure about a February in-person meeting yet. You can vote with a 'reply' to your favorite pet picture on the thread or a Private Message to me if you want your vote to be confidential and a surprise. 5. Submission deadline is Monday, February 21st (President's Day). But the sooner you post your picture, the more opportunities to have a neighbor vote for you! Hint - gather your Croissant Park neighbors to vote - It's Legal! 6. The winner will be featured on Nextdoor and will receive a great prize!

It was so much fun last year that Croissant Park Civic Association Director, Jodi Perraud and her neighbors on 20th Street have organized another event!  It will take place between SW 2nd & SW 3rd Ave. There will be music, pet parade, food, pet rescue group and a walk around the neighborhood.  So dress them up or come ‘au-natural’.  It should be a lot of fun for everyone—even if you don’t have a pet, bring the family and get to know your neighbors—both 2-legged and 4-legged kind!  Keep checking Nextdoor for updates.

 

To promote a safe and healthful environment, all dogs are required to be on a leash and participants must comply with all guidelines and laws in accordance to Broward County’s key provisions of Chapter 4 of the Broward County Code, the Broward County  Animal Care Ordinance

Kitten Rescue

Jean & Marian Ready had a litter of kittens stuck in their carport wall and the mother was only able to get two of them out of the wall. With ladder, mirror and salad tongs they were determined to get the last two out of the wall. Well, long story short.... neighbor Tim Mellard came by to help out and somehow reached the kittens.

If you are looking for a kitten, they have four that will be ready for adoption in about 6 weeks! Way to go ladies - and Tim!

And your little dog too……..

OK, I am reduced to writing about dog poop. Not my idea of a riveting read, but it has been a subject of much discussion at recent Association meetings and the time has come to address the issue. If you have a dog(s) there are certain responsibilities that come with your pet. These include, in no particular order of importance, feeding, grooming, providing exercise and medical attention and of course, lots of love. That means that you do not let your pet wander about off leash (in addition to be dangerous for your pet- it is a violation of City law), and when you are walking your pet on a leash – YOU PICK UP AFTER IT.

If you walk your dog, you should be aware that it is a misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine and or 60 days in jail not to clean up after your pet. Now, I doubt too many people have been hauled off to jail for being pigs and not picking up after their pet, but that $500 fine is certainly a possibility.

For those of you who walk your dogs in the alley – why is that? The only thing we can figure is that you think that if your dog relieves itself in the alley, you don’t have to pick up after it- based on the theory that what happens in the alley stays in the alley. Not so. Just because your dog is not relieving itself on someone’s manicured lawn does not mean you don’t have to pick up after it. For those of you who walk around with a bag for those occasions when you have no intention of picking up the poop until your pooch is caught in the act- you are not fooling anyone. Those people who live on the alleys and use their yards are really tired of you (and you know who you are) people using the alley as a waste dump. In case you haven’t noticed – dog poop smells, gets on your shoes when you access the house through the alley (many neighbors have cottages and the access is through the alley.) and attracts flies. Plus it just isn’t nice.

My last word on the subject is my pet peeve (pun intended). It is for those of you with little dogs who think just because its poop is small, it doesn’t count. Trust me, it does- this is not a case where size matters- dog poop on your shoe is dog poop on your shoe.

Don’t make us get the flying monkeys after you.

Pet Waste Signage Program

Attached is a proposal for a pest waste signage program sponsored by the City. Please note that the requirements of the program mandate that any request for signs go through the Civic Association- and that there is a cost of $120 per sign. The Association does not currently have sufficient discretionary funds to consider this on a neighborhood wide basis, but individual homeowners who would like to be considered for a sign on THEIR property - and who are willing to advance the costs, are welcome to submit a request.

Grateful Paws Dog & Cat Rescue has helped a lot of people, saved a lot of lives, placed a lot of great dogs & cats in wonderful homes…

and has accomplished some pretty incredible rescues.

Grateful Paws Dog & Cat Rescue rescues neglected, surrendered, abandoned and abused animals in South Florida.

Unfortunately, our medical bills and supplies (even though discounted…) are not free and we need to continue to raise money to continue our work.

To save a life or a relationship, we’ve arranged for open heart surgeries, amputations, successful treatment for parvo, cherry eye, eye removal, broken bones, fractured hips, crushed pelvises, hip surgery – you name it. We’ve done it and have spayed, neutered and micro-chipped every animal that has crossed our path!

Winnie, beaten and shoved down a drain – the crushed leg had to be amputated. Success – adopted and living happily in Plantation.

Emma, a 2 month old Shih-Tzu, diagnosed with parvo – Success –adopted and is living in New York!

Gus, a 4 lb. T-cup Chihuahua, about 11 years old - dumped & found wandering the streets. Adopted: We did a complete senior profile, a major dental, a neuter and is now living happily in Victoria Park.

Millie, a 5 month old Wheaton Terrier, diagnosed with a defective heart valve – successful surgery – adopted and now living happily in her new home.

The list goes on and on and is too numerous to mention…

And through fundraising events, donations from people who believe in what we do---, yard sales and bake sales, we have always managed to cover the vet bills. But… our debt is pretty steep right now and our ability to help the next animal depends on us being able to help the ones we have in our care right now.

We have a couple fundraising events in the hopper - (Save the date for Saturday, October 23^rd – Central Bark Doggy Day Care – it’s our 2^nd Annual Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Party)- this & other events will be posted on the main page of our website. www.gratefulpaws.org

Wandered away from home on SW 14 Street on Monday, June 7th. She is 17 years old, petite, deaf and sometimes seems "confused". She has been eating well and drinking water, but is a little wobbly at times, sleeps a lot and needs her medication.

An all white cat with a dangling collar has been living at our house for the last 3 days and nights. He or she won't let us get close enough to look at the collar but (it) seems lost. Last night (it) jumped into our garage and slept there all night. Thanks, Janice - SW 14th Street

Pit Bull Attack

A neighbor reported being attacked by a female, grey & white Pit Bull dog while she was walking her dog on a leash. The Pit Bull bit the woman's dog and knocked her to the ground. Some men came to her assistance and pulled the dog away. She called the police and was told to call animal control - they were closed.

A man on a bike came by and said he knew who the dog belonged to, it had been loose for 3-4 days and asked her not to call the police. He put his belt around the dog's neck to take him to his home around 21 St & 3rd Terrace (sounds way too close to the tot-lot at Peney Park).

This woman was deservedly upset by this attack and wants her neighbors to be aware of this aggressive animal that apparently does not have responsible owners.

There are certainly some sweet Pit Bulls in this world - at least that is what we keep hearing from their owners - this is not one of them. Be on the lookout and don't hesitate to call the Police or animal control if you see it on the loose again. Better to keep calling to report than wait for the animal to hurt someone else. found dog

A very sweet brown Dachshund was found wandering in the 700 block of SW 17 Street today (Tues. 2/23). She was taken inside by neighbors who got her out of traffic. They are taking her to the vet to see if she has a chip, but cannot keep her as they are already fostering cats at their home. If you know who she belongs to, please have them call 954-523-9438 with proof of ownership so she can get back home quickly.
