We had a great general meeting this past week and it was nice turn out. Again, Expresso Coffee donated coffee to the meeting. Expresso has donated coffee to the CPCA meeting for no charge for over 4 years now.

All-in-One Fitness

The class offers a fun, core-conditioning experience based on a Pilates/Yoga inspired work out. This enhanced exercise is powered by a fast moving routine that builds and strengthens flexibility and muscle tone. A stability ball helps tone your midsection through balance and strengthening exercises. This is a low impact class with vitalizing, body sculpting results!

Croissant Park Swim Club

Interested in taking what you learned from the summer and trying it out….here is your chance. The Swim Club is a recreation swim team where the kids will work on stroke technique, endurance, with a little fun thrown in. Come on in and make a splash with the Dolphins’ Swim Club.

Dates: September 7 – December 2

Days: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Fee: Residents $40 per month, Non-Residents $60 per month, Y.E.S. $10 per month

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is initiating “Operation Auto Shield” in an effort to combat vehicle burglaries occurring in the south side of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Crime Analysis and Intelligence Led Policing reports confirm that City parks, gas stations, shopping center lots and cemeteries are repeat targets of vehicle burglaries. “Operation Auto Shield” will address this problematic crime trend by means of a three pronged action plan:

STAGE 1 – Public Information

In the initial stage of “Operation Auto Shield,” the public will be informed of areas targeted by vehicle burglaries. Fliers will be placed on unattended vehicles. Message boards will be strategically deployed near highly targeted areas, informing the public to secure their valuables before leaving their vehicle. The “Skywatch” will also be dispersed throughout the south side of the City.

STAGE 2 – Police Saturation

The message boards will be removed, along with the “Skywatch,” as patrol officers in marked vehicles saturate the areas known to be targeted by burglars. The “Peacemaker” will be deployed and rotated within target areas, to capture any criminal activity on surveillance footage. Undercover personnel will conduct surveillance throughout this stage on possible burglary suspects.

STAGE 3 – Undercover Apprehension

This stage of “Operation Auto Shield” will involve multiple decoy cars being placed throughout the City. These vehicles will be deployed to targeted areas in an attempt to apprehend those still wishing to commit burglaries despite the increased police presence.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department is proud to announce the commencement of “Operation Auto Shield.” “Operation Auto Shield” will address the growing problem of auto burglaries throughout the City of Fort Lauderdale, especially with the approaching Holiday Season.

Kitten Rescue

Jean & Marian Ready had a litter of kittens stuck in their carport wall and the mother was only able to get two of them out of the wall. With ladder, mirror and salad tongs they were determined to get the last two out of the wall. Well, long story short.... neighbor Tim Mellard came by to help out and somehow reached the kittens.

If you are looking for a kitten, they have four that will be ready for adoption in about 6 weeks! Way to go ladies - and Tim!

Minutes of Croissant Park Civic Association Neighborhood Meeting

Meeting began at 7:10, presided by Steve Cook, who lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Board members present were Steve, Rhonda Kramer, Virginia Russell.

Capt. London from the Ft. Lauderdale Police Dept. reported that residential and vehicle theft crimes are down from July and August figures. He attributes this possibly to school being back in session. There have been 19 arrests made, though he is not able to be specific about details of those arrests. There is a big effort underway to patrol the cemetery and surrounding areas for vehicle thefts. Criminals are stealing credit cards and ID’s, possibly for ID theft. He indicated that FLPD is making a direct impact on these types of theft. Remember to lock your vehicle and never leave valuables inside the car. The website www.raidsonline.com is the best way to access crime statistics, trends, and hotspots.

Our second speaker was Bob Meagher, one of our neighbors, who gave us an overview of the group messaging system GroupMe, and how it works on his block. It is a method that allows us to send a text message to our neighbors who have signed up, and those neighbors instantly receive the message. This is a great tool to alert all to suspicious activity in the area, for example, and to be vigilant. Bob mentioned that a huge benefit of this system is that it afforded him an opportunity to get to know his neighbors. As a result of his presentation at the meeting, three residents volunteered to assist him in setting this system up for a wider area.

A question was raised regarding any up-to-date news about opening the port to through traffic. Steve reported that there is nothing new on that matter.

Another question was asked about donating greeting cards to send to our troops overseas. We would ask that everyone bring them to the next meeting in October so they can be sent to the troops in time for the holidays.

A new resident asked how to lodge a complaint about untended, overgown properties. Steve directed her to email the City of Fort Lauderdale Office of Neighborhood Support at www.fortlauderdale.gov.

Smartwise is an energy conservation group that will supply us with goody bags at our October 25th meeting at 6:30.

Nominating committee has been chosen for elections for the 2012 CPCA Board of Directors.

Halloween Party will be on October 29th. Donations of candy or money for the event will appreciated, as well as volunteers. The city will present Croissant Park with a Centennial Plaque on the same day as the Halloween Party.

The 50/50 drawing was one by Chief and Gail Alailima. Two CP t-shirts were also won in the raffle.
