Halloween Party 2010

The Halloween Party was a howling success. Thanks to the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Dept. - especially Lisa Thomas and Eric Thomas. Eric is the REALLY tall guy who always comes up with the best costume to amaze the kids. Thanks also to Buddy Sherman & the Southport Raw Bar for donating the delicious hotdogs and bottled water. The McDonald's restaurant on SR84 & SW 12 Ave generously donated the prizes for the first 250 kids to arrive. And, of course, all the neighbors from Croissant Park who supported the event with their donations of candy and cash so the kids could have a fabulous party. Minutes of the Croissant Park Civic Association

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 7:00 pm. Pat introduced our neighborhood Police Liaison - Captain Victor London. Captain London gave us the crime statistics for our area and took questions and input from the neighbors.

The new board for 2011 was approved by the membership as follows:

The upcoming Halloween event was discussed and several neighbors volunteered to help out at the party.

The 'cards for soldiers' was presented by Pat and we collected many cards to be sent to Afghanistan for the troops. We encourage everyone to save their unused cards (especially after the holidays) so that we can send another batch - possibly in the spring. So, if you missed this mailing, please save your cards for the next time.

This was also our annual fall pie night and the turnout of homemade pies was unbelievable. Maybe we can get some of the recipes to publish in time for the holidays. Expresso Coffee provided the gourmet coffee to go with the pie and it was a most delicious evening.

This was mostly a social evening for neighbors to get a chance to talk to each other and everyone seemed to have a good time.

The meeting adjourned a little after 8:00 p.m. with peace and harmony prevailing.

CROISSANT PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION MEETING – THE LAST ONE FOR THE YEAR!

HELP WITH OUR “CARDS FOR SOLDIERS” COLLECTION!!

So – if you have been planning on attending or getting more involved – or if you just want an excuse to try out potential new Thanksgiving pie recipes- plan on attending Tuesday October 26^th. We have a lot going on.

First- the 3^rd Annual Fall Pie Contest. Bake and bring a pie to share with neighbors and friends. The winning baker will receive a great prize- plus bragging rights. Any type of pie that screams “Fall” is eligible (and that includes things like lemon meringue and Key Lime since both have a way of showing up at the Thanksgiving table at my house- so they count!) - in addition to the more traditional apple, pecan, pumpkin or sweet potato. Share an old family favorite – or try out something new. If you are on Facebook and a friend of Croissant Park – you should have received an invitation to the meeting. Say yes- and tell us what type of pie you will be bringing.

Second- election of the new Board of Directors and Officers for the Civic Association – there is still time to nominate someone from the floor if you think you are interested or know someone who is.

Get in on the planning for our Halloween party for the neighborhood kids- we can always use more help at the event. In my youth, I actually was an assistant at a nursery school for a brief period which I have always thought contributed to the decision to have pets instead of children. The memories of a room full of screaming 3 and 4 year olds has a tendency to stick with you. But even I have overcome my past fear of diminutive persons and joined in as a volunteer at the Halloween event the last few years – and must admit- it has been fun. The kids are so excited – the costumes are great – everyone is AMAZINGLY well behaved (and relatively quiet) - and the best thing- the parents are so grateful that we are providing a fun, safe event for the kids. It really makes the event so worthwhile. If you can’t volunteer your time, how about bringing a bag of candy or two to the meeting on Tuesday? Every little bit helps.

Lastly – our “GREETING CARDS FOR SOLDIERS” collection. We are taking up a collection of new (again – new does not necessarily mean that you bought it yesterday- new also means that it has been in your “card stash” for ages and is clean and new looking). I had my hair cut yesterday and my hair dresser was so excited he was going home to collect boxes of Christmas cards that he said he had only sent a few from- leaving lots leftover for us to collect and send. One thing that soldiers who are deployed have a tough time finding is greeting cards to send home to loved ones- there is not exactly a Hallmark card store on these forward operating bases. They need cards for every occasion – holidays- of course- including Valentine’s Day, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day – and also Mothers Day, Father’s Day- birthdays –anniversary- get well – graduation – thank you – cheer up – or simply “I’m thinking of you”. It helps them stay in touch with loved ones at home- even though they can e-mail – there is nothing like getting a card from a loved one to make you feel connected.

We are sending this first batch to an army base in Sharana, Afghanistan where one of the nurses has volunteered to distribute them. She says that she will put a box in the clinic and also give them to the chaplains who have boxes out to distribute personal items. Let’s really work on getting a lot of cards to send- if you are not able to come to the meeting- let us know via Facebook/email and we will see about picking them up. Or you can drop them off in advance at Rhonda's house 712 SW 14 Street.

Did You Steal My Garbage Can?

Life sometimes can be a routine, go shopping, clean the house, bring the garbage out on Tuesday and Friday and when you do these things you usually don't notice anything different. Well, this past Tuesday, I rolled my garbage out with my beautiful black plastic container the city gives us early Tuesday morning. The next step of the routine is retrieving the garbage container and bringing it back to the side of my house. Well, I walked out there to get it and it was gone! Nowhere to be found. Its a mystery. Did someone take it? Did the city take it? I know this is nothing in today's social climate, unemployment so high, our property values plummeting, the big Congressional election for our District 20, and so forth. But it does have me scratching my head saying " Would anyone really take it?"

Anyway, did you take my garbage can by mistake? :) There won't be any questions asked and I have a $25 reward for the person or city employee returning it. They say that money motivates. We will see.

Request for a Moratorium on PUD’s

Dear Neighborhood Presidents:

Tuesday, December 7^th, 1:30 PM

the Commission has scheduled to hear the Request for a Moratorium on PUD’s.

Your presence and participation is needed!

8^th Floor, City Hall

The Mayor requested Greg Brewton to provide a PUD information packet to them for their education.

Greg’s immediate response was that he could educate them in 3 – 4 minutes. The Mayor asked for more detail.

We have requested a copy of the information provided the Commission. We’ll share with you upon receipt.

In the meantime, PLEASE put December 7^th, 1: 30 PM – 3:30 PM on your calendar to have yourself OR a representative of your neighborhood to show support and speak for the requested Moratorium on PUD’s.

To those who were present this Tuesday, our gratitude.

Secondly, if you can personally introduce us to neighborhoods which would like to learn more about the Moratorium on PUD’s, PLEASE contact us with their information. We look forward to following up.

As you all know, If this ordinance is not properly vetted with public input and more inclusions of MUSTS rather than MAYS, every neighborhood continues to be in jeopardy.
